More recently, companies have begun using synthetic materials in the construction of bass guitars. Graphite has been popular for many years now. Companies like Zon Guitars and Modulus Guitars make excellent bass guitars using graphite. A newer material called Luthite is now being used by Ibanez Guitars.
Where every piece of wood is slightly different, synthetic materials are very consistent. Most wood has dead spots somewhere in it and those dead spots can kill the tone of your bass. Using man-made materials solves this problem. Also, not using wood cuts down on the deforestation of the planet. Of course, who knows what the factories making the synthetic guitar material are bellowing out?
