Bass Exercises: Root Fifth Sixth

Root Fifth Sixth Exercises

Bass Exercise #1: R-5-6 Applied to Chords G, C, & D

Here we apply the root, lower 5th, and lower 6th to the chords G, C, and D. It is nothing exciting. Notice the emphasis is still on the root and 5th. The 5th is always landing on the beat.

Bass Exercise #2: R-5-6 on Chords A and D

Here is another simple application of roots, 5ths, and 6ths on the major chords A and D. The 6th adds a slight melodic element to an otherwise basic root and fifth bassline.

Bass Exercise #3: R-5-6 on C-G-Am-F

This bassline uses the root, 5th and 6th on the major chords in this chord progression (C, G, and F). The 6th does not sound good on the A minor chord so we only use its root and 5th.

Bass Exercise #4: R-5-6 on D and G chords

This one is quick for beginners. Alternate your fingers! Work your tempo up to 90 BPM using a metronome. A bassline alone implies chords when you emphasize the notes of each chord well.
