Bass Exercise #1: Approach Notes on G, C, and D

In this example we lead into each root note from one note below. Notice how the approach notes create tension pulling you to the root. The roots still define the chord by landing on the beat.

Here is another example of approaching each root note from one note below. Targeting chord tones on the beat will always create a solid foundation for a chord progression.

You can add a little motion to a simple bassline just by adding an approach note just before each chord change.

Bass Exercise #4: Passing and Approach Notes

The roots to this progression are a whole-step apart (2 notes). That makes it an ideal place for a passing note inbetween the roots. I also added some approach notes to the roots mid-bar.
