One Octave Minor Pentatonic Scale Exercises
Bass Exercise #1: C Minor Pentatonic Example
Here's a simple example of how you might apply the C minor pentatonic scale on a C minor 7th chord. Notice how the chord tones C, Eb, G and Bb are emphasized on the beat. This helps bring out the sound of the chord in your bassline which is what the band needs from the bass player.
Bass Exercise #2: E Minor Pentatonic Rock Example
You'll find this scale used a lot in rock riffs and used for fills. When using this scale pattern on E and using open strings, adjust your fingering appropriately and watch the string muting.
Bass Exercise #3: F# Minor Pentatonic Funk Example
Many funk basslines make heavy use of the minor pentatonic scale. This example uses a "16th note swing" rhythmic feel common in many hip hop and funk songs. This is the same idea as swing 8th notes only applied to 16th notes.
