String Crossing Exercises

Bass Exercise #1: E-Based String Crossing

Practice going from E to every other string. Mute the E-string with your thumb any time you are not playing it. All the other strings will be muted by your fretting hand when returning to E.

Bass Exercise #2: A-Based String Crossing

Similarly, go from open A to every other string. Mute as outlined in the plucking and fretting lessons.

Bass Exercise #3: D-Based String Crossing

Now the same thing using open D as your main string... You can practice these at any tempo. Strive for consistency and balance.

Bass Exercise #4: G-Based String Crossing

Finally (if you have 4 strings), use open G as your main string and cross to every other string. Pay attention to muting. You should only hear one note at a time.
